You have most likely heard about the COVID-19 stimulus package passed by Congress, called the CARES Act. It includes a $1,200 check for every adult U.S. citizen making $75,000 a year or less. A second stimulus is package is currently in discussion, and may result in another round of similar payments. However, some people have still not received their first check yet. There has also been some confusion about how to get a stimulus check if you receive Social Security benefits. Can you get a stimulus check if you’re on Social Security benefits?
Yes! As long as you make under $75,000 a year as an individual or $150,000 per year as a married couple, you qualify to receive the full $1,200 per adult. If you earn over those amounts, then your check will be reduced accordingly. The maximum earning cutoff is $99,000 for individuals and $198,000 for couples. Those receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can also get a stimulus check.
Do you need to file a tax return to get a stimulus check if you don’t normally file?
Since the IRS is basing check totals on 2018 or 2019 tax returns, some Social Security recipients are unsure if they need to file a tax return to get their checks. However, if you receive Social Security benefits and the IRS does not normally require you to file a tax return, then you don’t need to this year either to get your payment. The IRS will use your SSA-1099 form or a similar benefit statement to calculate your check amount. If you have qualifying dependent children, you will get an extra $500 per child. Unfortunately, if you are on Social Security, you will not receive this additional money until you file your 2020 taxes.
If you do not receive Social Security benefits, and also did not make enough to have to file taxes for 2018 or 2019, you will have to confirm your eligibility. The IRS created a new web tool to help you make sure that you get your payment. You will need to visit the IRS website and provide your basic information, including your name, address, Social Security number, and information on your dependents. There is also a place to enter your bank account information to have your check direct deposited. Providing this information won’t have any effect on your tax obligations.
How are Economic Impact Payments delivered?
The IRS is distributing stimulus payments via direct deposit or paper check. If they have your bank account information on file, then they will deposit your money directly into your bank account. If they do not have your account information, then they will send you a paper check in the mail. Those on Social Security will typically get their stimulus checks in the same manner they get their Social Security benefits, either by mail, by direct deposit, or on their Direct Express debit card. This also applies to those with representative payees. If you will receive your check by mail, you should be aware that the IRS is expecting delays of up to a few months.
Are there any other qualifications that you need to meet to get a stimulus check?
Yes, there are a couple of other requirements, in addition to the income limits mentioned earlier. You must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. resident alien and have a Social Security number (SSN). Also, you cannot be listed as a dependent of another taxpayer. Everyone who meets these qualifications should receive an Economic Impact Payment.
